Questions and Answers to Voter ConcernsBy Jim SordenCandidate for Council Member; City of Saratoga | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
1. How do you plan to protect Saratoga's neighborhoods? I believe we need to pay more attention to the architectural compatability of both new and remodeled homes. We also need to honor our existing CC&Rs. We need to maintain the low density and tranquil feel of Saratoga. I'm also concerned about reducing the existing freeway noise and cleaning up our creeks. 2. Many of our residents are choosing to remodel or expand their homes. Do you feel the current restrictions and policies are sufficient? I believe that our one-story neighborhoods must be protected and the look and feel of neighborhoods must be honored. Three-story structures have no place in our low density community. 3. What are your major concerns about Saratoga's infrastructure? We need to improve maintenance on our roads, bicycle paths and other walkways. We also need to immediately start the improvement availability of the North Campus facility. 4. You indicate you want to restore fiscal responsibility. Can you explain? One way would be to avoid expensive projects undertaken without local approval. I refer specifically to the 14 obelisks then the Council approved and built at the north entrance to Saratoga which then had to be torn down because of citizen outrage. I mentioned a second example above + the need to make the North Campus usable and affordable for our residents. 5. Why do you feel Saratogans do not have a voice in key decisions? A number of opportunities for citizen participation have been eliminated. Many citizen advisory committees have been disbanded or curtailed. These committees provide a familiarity and expertise that is invaluable in decision-making. Theyalso represent the financial and emotional investment of our residents. Furthermore, I believe we need to re-establish the citizen design review process because issues of development compatibility cannot always be resolved by an ordinance and thoughtful community input is needed for building projects as well as public projects |
