Political Philosophy for Michele McKay McCoy

I believe the most important qualities for any judge are respect for others, respect for the law, and good work habits. Respect for others is demonstrated by being on time, prepared, and polite to everyone in the courtroom. A judge is no more or less important than the court staff, the attorneys, the parties, the witnesses and the jurors. Respect for the law is demonstrated by determining which laws apply and then following them. Nothing is more dangerous than a judge who makes a ruling based on what "feels" right. Even in those cases where the law allows judicial discretion, a judge's ruling should be based on specific legal reasons which can be stated on the record. Good work habits are essential. A thorough knowledge of the law takes time and careful attention. My current job as a teacher helps in this matter, for I must understand the law myself before I can teach it. |
