Get Involved, Vote or Keep Quiet
By Alex Kennett

A lot of people in Morgan Hill seem to feel that nothing they say or do will make a difference in city government. It is evident by the lack of participation in this year's Community Conversations. It is apparent by the lack of logical robust debate on many municipal issues. And, it is obvious when you look at voter turnout levels. Face it, not only here in Morgan Hill but all across the country, people feel their voice doesn't count. If I am elected to the city council, I promise that I will work to change that perception.

Perhaps we have been desensitized in a world where partisan's shouting sound bites at each other is viewed as intelligent political debate. Perhaps we have all just run out of time between work, children's activities and sleep to get involved.

Whatever the reason, it is important to know that things get decided by those who show up. Politicians listen to people who attend meetings or write letters, before an issue is decided. And, they react much better when being criticized in civilized terms.

I have heard the criticism and the comments about money spent on the Community Conversations and how the issues were framed. The points may be valid, but the criticism and comments most often came from people who didn't participate. I have heard comments from people who suggested that the city would have learned the same information had City Council members simply sat down with everyday folks at one of our many Starbucks's. I'm not sure I agree. City leaders need to be out in the community and aware of the mood of the people. But they also learn quickly that the loudest voice is most often the least representative.

I understand the time is our most precious commodity. Between work, kids, the commute and sleep, it really is challenging to work in attendance at a community meeting. I know. I've been there. But one day, I put aside my cynicism and raised my hand. I have been active in The Sierra Club, the Chamber of Commerce and many other activities. I even ran for elective office and won, serving as South County's representative on the county's Open Space Authority.

I've not only gotten a better understanding of how government works, I've made many new friends. And, I've learned that it isn't that difficult to channel will into action and get something done. I would encourage you to get involved, to raise your hand.

I have a poster on my wall that shows a flock of ducks stating, "Lead, follow or get out of the way." I choose to lead.

There is a time for talk and a time for action. Now is time for action.
