Why I am running for school board.By Joyce A. AzevedoCandidate for Board Member; Buellton Union School District; 4 Year Term | |

As found on my website, http://www.electazevedo.comAs the mother of two boys, ages 15 and 11, who have been at Jonata since Kindergarten, I have spent numerous hours volunteering at the school. I consider myself to be a highly involved parent. I believe strongly that you get out of public education what you put into it and want to insure that our curriculum meets the highest standards. We need to hire and retain highly qualified, highly motivated teachers and provide them the support and tools that they need to teach our children, not just to pass a test, but to succeed in life. In the face of budget cuts and growing enrollment, we need to scrutinize our budget carefully to see that school funds are spent wisely. I have spent the past two years on the school budget committee where I have gained valuable insight into where school funding comes from and how it is allocated. I am also concerned about school safety issues. I want to be sure that our schools are safe havens for our children. No child should be afraid to be at school due to bullying. Board policy must be zero tolerance to such behavior and the Board must be willing to enforce this rule. Another area of concern in safety issues is our disaster preparedness. As a small community with limited resources our school must be prepared to house and care for our children in the event of an emergency. As PTSA President I secured funds from the City to stock emergency medical supplies and a trailer in which to store them. As an emergency room nurse who has worked on different County EMS committees, I am fully aware of how isolated we are here in the Valley. We need to be fully prepared to care for our children in a crisis. I have chaired the running of the school's jog-a-thon for the past six years. I co-chaired the fundraising for my oldest son's trip to Catalina Science Camp. I organized and held a blood drive at our school. I am committed to finishing a task once begun and capable of working with a varied group of people without conflict. I consider myself open-minded and fair and willing to listen to all sides without prejudice. I have an excellent rapport with both the teachers and administrators at our schools. I have attended numerous school board meetings and am familiar with Robert's Rules of Order and Parliamentary procedure having served as President for two years and then Parliamentarian for two years on the PTSA Executive Board. I am asking for your vote this fall that I may serve the children of Buellton to the best of my abilities by helping to ensure a safe, creative, optimal educational environment in our schools. Thank you for your consideration. Should you wish to contact me, I can be reached by email at jazevedo@verizon.net. Sincerely, Joyce A. Azevedo |
