I support rent control in Santa Monica. People must have a sense of security in their homes.Rent control ensures that no tenant will be forced out of his or her home by an unexpected rent increase. The City must also ensure tenants' security through enforcement of City and State anti-harassment laws. The Santa Monica Rent Control Law is part of the City Charter and can only be changed by a vote of the people (not the City Council). Nevertheless, because 70% of Santa Monica residents are tenants, councilmembers must still closely monitor rent control and tenants' rights issues. |
