Hospital financial losesBy Roger BergerCandidate for Board of Directors; Antelope Valley Health Care District | |

The hospital continues to struggle in their efforts to secure financial balanceWhile it would appear on the surface that the hospital has turned it self around into the black, their remains a shadow of doubt regarding their efforts to enhance their financial future. A secure financial future was part of the campaign rhetoric that was championed by several candidates in the 2002 hospital board elections. It is unfortunate that campaign rhetoric was just that, and the promise of a financial success has fallen short of projected expectations. The hospital's operational vision, if it is a reflection back upon the last four years, is a clear indication that a major change is needed in the hospital's ability to oversee any future plans or projects. AV Hospital is the only major hospital in the area, and that needs to be emphasized to local providors. All contracts must be renegotiated to insure a healthy 8% to 15% profit margin in order to raise the hospitals financial gains. AV Hospital is a not for profit facility, but it must have a level of profitability in order to pay its employees a decent wage and provide a benefit package to attract employees, upgrade medical equipment and continue to provide health care to all the Antelope Valley Citizens. There also needs to be a complete review of the Nursing Department, Building and Facilities Department, the Human Resources Department, and especially the employee Defined Benefit Plan. These are the four major areas which have been and continue to be fraught with controversy, a tremendous loss of patient care dollars, and a lack of financial over sight. |
