Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Rick A. Schreffler

Candidate for
Trustee; State Center Community College District; Trustee Area 5

I will serve the voters, taxpayers, and students of State Center in the most fiscally sound and fiduciary manner possible. All my decisions will be based on what is best for those three groups, and no other organization. Let it be thoroughly clear that I will always take into consideration the fact that the faculty and employees of State Center have to provide for their families and themselves. It will always be a part of my decision process that they are providing a service to the students and residents of the Valley. As such, they deserve a salary that will allow them to provide for their needs, and save for their children's education, as well as, their retirement years. They also deserve to be addressed both by the students, and the administration--including the board--in a respectful manner.

I would like the District to move in a more technological direction. To offer more courses that will prepare the population for such careers. If we could demonstrate that we had the people with the experience, then our local leaders would be able to attract those firms. After all, we are centrally located and have cheaper land than San Jose or Socal. Our economy is at a level that is unseen in most areas of the United States. We lack the amount of stable industry that supports the job market in most metropolitan areas. We can no longer ignore the manufacturing sector, while continuing to support agriculture and construction. Yet expect the unemployment rate to diminish to a level commensurate with that of the rest of the state and country. The most economically productive areas have relied on manufacturing, research, and technology to a much greater extent than the Valley.

We must also understand that many of the people within SCCCD must provide for their families, and therefore, can not stop work to go to school. With such an understanding already in mind, we must schedule our classes to be more accommodating to the working population. That is why I would like to increase the number of evening and weekend classes, if they could be structured in a way to attract these people and be financially feasible. Such an idea might not be popular with certain groups at first, but if we could offer the same type of classes that are offered M-F/8AM-5PM, then the number wouldn't have to be of an equivalent amount.
