LettersVote for Vieira Editor: I fully endorse Dee Vieira as a candidate for the Antioch Unified School District Board of Education. Dee embodies all of the characteristics a community would hope to find in a School Board member. Dee is very astute, very thoughtful, and very knowledgeable about issues pertaining to schools in the Antioch Unified School District. She investigates any issue she supports thoroughly. She listens to all sides, conducts appropriate research, and takes a position on an issue based on her investigation. When Dee involves herself in a project, an issue or a cause, she gives it her all. I have known her to give hours and hours of personal time to worthy causes that need special attention. She is a very strong advocate for children and for public education, and she works hard to ensure that schools receive all that they need to be successful. Dee understands the issues facing the Antioch community and will work collaboratively to find solutions. As a parent at Dallas Ranch Middle School, Dee helped to organize a very successful fund-raising auction and was instrumental in garnering community support to raise over $35,000. Dee is a devoted member of the Antioch community who will work tirelessly for schools. She is conscientious, committed and someone who has the perseverance to see a project through to completion. Her voice on the board is needed. Rachel Zinn Vieira a great addition Editor: I believe Dee Vieira would be a great addition to the Antioch School Board. I've known Dee for over 10 years, and during this time I have seen her get involved in several community causes, all with the single purpose of making Antioch a better place. To mention just a few of the contributions Dee has made: She initiated a dress code survey that sampled the opinions of parents at five local schools, prompting the A.U.S.D. to rewrite the policy; she co-chaired and organized two auctions at Dallas Ranch Middle School that raised over $60,000 for books, sports and education needs; and she was co-leader of a campaign that prevented a poorly planned apartment complex in Antioch. Dee has two children currently attending Antioch schools, so she is aware of the challenges that face our school system. She is committed to improving our schools and has the dedication, skills and experience to make it happen. Please join me in voting for Dee Vieira. Jim Zirkel Editor: The Antioch Unified School District needs new decisive leadership. Lagging test scores and financial setbacks have plagued the AUSD and cannot be tolerated. Dee Vieira is a hands-on leader with experience in the semiconductor industry as a problem solver. She also has experience as a bookkeeper, which is important to a school district that has been in financial straits not once, but twice in the last 10 years. Poor leadership has led to cuts in guidance counselors, music teachers and programs for our students. We are coming out of the most recent crisis and we need the type of leadership that will ensure the AUSD stays on a sound footing. When newly opened Dallas Ranch Middle School had no money to purchase books for its brand-new but empty-shelved library, or have funds for classroom enrichment programs and also lacked funds for middle school sports, Dee Vieira did not blame state cutbacks + she started a fund-raiser to meet the shortfall. The Dallas Ranch Middle School auction, despite initial resistance from the AUSD, has raised in excess of $60,000 over the last two years to enhance classroom programs and after-school sports, and buy books for the library. Dee was a key leader among a group of parents who made this possible. School Board hopeful Dee Vieira has also shared the secrets of her success with other district schools that are now starting their own fund-raisers. The AUSD needs a leader to build bridges between local businesses, corporations, civic leaders and parents to promote and fund both in-school and after-school programs. Dee Vieira has demonstrated that ability. Please vote for Dee Vieira on Nov. 7.
