Born in the Southern California city of Arcadia and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Steve Westly is a proud California native. An innovator throughout his career, Steve was an early executive at eBay, which he helped to build into one of America's most successful companies. Serving as State Controller of California since 2002, he's been a tough fiscal watchdog. By championing innovation and accountability in government, Steve is a strong advocate for Democratic values:

  • He's led the fight against tax swindles. By implementing two innovative anti-tax-cheat reform programs, he's helped bring in $3.5 billion over the last two years to keep critical state programs + like our schools and hospitals + up and running.

  • He's fought global warming by leading an international effort to pressure Detroit to make cleaner cars. Steve put together the Global Warming Watch Coalition, which has already forced Ford to agree to a shareholder resolution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

  • He helped lead the campaign for the stem cell initiative. The $3 billion in grants will save lives, spur research, and bring new jobs and industries to California. Where George Bush has failed, California has led--with an imaginative new program.

  • He's sued Interior Secretary Gale Norton to take back the auto company tax royalties that ought to be going to our public schools. Steve has spent his life working in both the public and private sectors. He's served in government at the local, state and federal level, having spent time in San Jose's Office of Economic Development and at the Department of Energy in Washington, DC.

He's served the California Democratic Party in a variety of positions. At 23, he became the youngest party official ever by being elected California Democratic Party Treasurer. He later served as Vice-Chair and has been a Democratic National Committee member for over 20 years. He was a faculty member at Stanford Business School and later helped former students harness the entrepreneurial spirit by joining several startup companies before he went to work at eBay. Of all his accomplishments, he is most proud of the strength of his family and the support of his wife, Anita Yu, and his two young children.
