Tom Condit was born in 1937 in Spokane, Washington. His family moved to California in search of work when he was a child. He was raised and educated in California (Los Angeles, Redding, Hollister). He graduated from San Benito County High School in June 1955.

After graduating from high school he worked as a farm laborer and restaurant potwasher before joining the United States Marine Corps, where he was trained as a radio repairman. Like most military skills, this proved to be useless in civilian life, and after leaving the service, Condit worked as a farm laborer, printer, copy editor, fork lift operator, taxi driver, shipper and legal secretary.

In the 1960s he was an active member and a national officer of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS). In 1967 he worked on the registration campaign which put the Peace & Freedom Party on the ballot and was one of the statewide officers elected at the founding convention of the party in Richmond, California in 1968.

Formerly an active member of the Teamsters Union, he was a founding West Coast member of Teamsters for a Democratic Union. He worked as a volunteer copy editor and distributor for the rank and file newspaper "The Fifth Wheel."

As the Peace & Freedom Party's 1990 Insurance Commissioner candidate, he received 3.9% of the vote (281,276 votes). In 1994 he received 1.8% (150,933 votes) for the same office.

He has also been a PFP candidate for State Assembly, State Senate, Congress and Board of Equalization.
