Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Timothy K. Fitzgerald

Candidate for
Mayor; City of San Jose

This information is provided by the candidate

I believe all men (and women) were created EQUAL. That they were endowed by their Creator with certain inalienlable rights: Including Life, Liberty and Happiness.

I am a devoted member of the Green Philosophy, and its Four Pillars of Wisdom. 1) Non-Violence (I am a member of the Fellowship of Reconciliation and believe in peaceful reconcilation of differences and conflict). 2) Ecological Wisdom (One Planet - One People. This is our heretige and must be husbanded for all postierity...I have been active with the Sierra Club since 1963, and am an active advocate of wilderness Preservation). 3) Social Justice ((I first entered the Civil Rights Movement in the 60's as an advocate for Free Speach and Assembly on my college Campus at San Jose State. I atended workshops at Joan Baez's Institute for the Study of Mon-Violence after Kent State, and have worked ceaselessly for the rights of the underpriveleged and disadvantaged as a city Commissioner and County Board Chairperson). 4) Participatory Democracy (I have offered myself as a candidate to serve my community before, and may well again. I have empowered the silemt and helpless, and as with a women candidate in Distritct Three this election , guided others to beocme leaders of their neighborhood and in the community.

I have long questioned the justificationa nd legitamacy of the Status Quo, having authored as chief archetect of San Jose State Univeristy Campus governmental charter, their student body consitution, creating and all-college, student/ faculty governing apparatus thirty five years ago, that is largely still in tact today. I amm a skillful leader and worked for 15 years to organize the Green Party of Californ to gain ballot status and candiadate recongnition. I am presently on the National Green Party Presidetntal Selection Committee for 2008.

Actions speak louder than words, I do not seek high public office as a savv to ego or to pad my pocketbook, but ouit of genuine concern for my country and my community,, having come from a long line of patriots dating back to forefathers who fought at Kings Mountain to turn back the Tories and Redcoats in the Revoltuionary War, and again to keep the Union sound, at Shilo under Grant in the War Between the States.

My family has been integrally involved in Silicon Valley for over 100 years, dating to when my Grandfather Fitzgerald returned after successful ventures at Nome Alaska during the Klondike Gold rush of 1998, and Grandfather Huston settled in San Jose after a futile effort in the wine business in Morgan Hill. My Great Uncle Charlie Larson, a Restraunteer, and prominent businessman here prior to the Depression, also ran for public office as a Progressive.

I do not beleive in misleading the voters in this election by promising the moon, when they can merely delieve garbage collection. I am not running, as some candidates would have you believe in this mayor's race in San Jose, to improve the sohools,, for which they have no authority or responsiblity - as that is the progrative of the Superintendent of Schools. And I do not intend to replace thye work of the Chamber of Commerce, and facilate business opportunities here beyond the socpe of CIty authortiy. As that is done by others far more skilled than a mere civic leader. BUT I will cultivate a good atmosphre for both and more.

I beleive it is the duty and responsibilty of the cheif officer of the City, as Mayor, to lead the City Couincil and guide them through the daily tasks of governance. That it is the Mayors duty to set goals and proirities and see to otheir fulfillment, and in conjunciton with this, in view of recent turn of events, believe it is necessary and critical for the City to undertake Charter review, and reconsider the City Manager/ City Mayor joint leadership that has lead to San Jose impressive but tragic growth cycle in the last 50 years.

It is further, neceassary for the City to undertake projects not assumed by other levels of government, as a stop gap to chaos and confussion within the community, and lead the way to finally solving the homeless problem, a local problem of national scope, the day care crisis amongst our working poor and two wage-earner households, and such agumented services funded froom the Redevelopment pool now being directed toward luxary give-aways in the Neighbhor hood pork that has developed under Ron Gonzales.

Everyone has the right to make their individual voice heard in the halls aof government. And I would direct Council memebers to keep a keen eye on thier neighborhoods which they represent, and build storng alliances with business, commerce, landlords, and homeowners to make a sure and certain bond with City Government that promoted ingenuity rather than pork, leadership rather than buruaucracy, and democracy rather than tyranny.
