Questions & Answers

1. How can the City of Whittier best secure an acceptable standard of public safety?

First we should note that crime rates have been falling for the last several years in Whittier. Crime rates today are once again comparable to the 1960's. The use of "community based policing" is building stronger relations with neighborhoods and businesses. By giving responsibility for different areas to particular supervising officers we allow them to become familar with people and businesses in an area and to be more in touch with potential problems. Building this personal relationship establishes trust and communication and involves neighborhoods to help lower crime.

2. What is your vision for the Nellis School property?

This 74 acre parcel is a great opportunity for our city. It offers a chance for us to bring new businesses and housing along with significant tax revenues. We must use our ability to control the zoning on this property to be sure that we get the right mix of uses to be sure that the development is in Whittier's best interests and not just what is best for a developer. Quality development, preservation of important historical resources and generation of tax revenues to help provide police and other services for the entire community must be our goal.

3. What is your vision for a new library in Whittier?

Our existing library does a wonderful job as shown by the constantly increasing demand for its services. We have outgrown the current facilities and also need to bring our technology up to date with the latest tools for research and learning. We have purchased an excellent site in Uptown which would also serve to bring thousands of people back into our historic shopping district. Now we need the State bond act to pass which would guarantee approximately 2/3 of the funds to build the new library that has been designed. Voters will decide this year.
