The Role of the School BoardBy James "Jim" ChouraCandidate for Member, Board of Education; Long Beach Unified School District; District 5 | |

Delivering Excellent EducationParents entrust to us the most important persons in their lives + their children. It's our job to provide good schools and a good education to each child and family we serve. It's also up to us to have well-run schools that give taxpayers solid results for their tax dollars. Delivering excellent education at low cost is not easy. Despite the fact that we receive far less per student than the average school district in Los Angeles County, we were named the Best Urban School District in the Nation by the Eli Broad Foundation. That national award was earned for narrowing the achievement gap and raising the test scores of all groups of students. Our schools rank among the best in the state and nation. They continue to make impressive gains in achievement. We enjoy seamless education with LBCC and CSULB that enables more of our graduates to earn college degrees. We have award-winning teachers and employees, among the finest in America. Are we satisfied? NO! Are we determined to do even better? YES! Are there challenges that make it more difficult to excel as a student, a school or a school district today? OF COURSE. But we are determined never to let you or your children down. They come first. |
