We need to have community input into the review of the curriculum at our schools so that we can give our students the best possible education.Thanks to the generosity of our citizens, parents and educators, I don't think there are any glaring holes in our curriculum. Before mapping out a complete and detailed response to this question, I would need to solicit input from all corners. For starters, I would ask recent grads for their response to this question based on their college experiences. I would ask our educators what areas are emerging in their fields of expertise and, from this, what courses should be modified or added. I would ask our curriculum director what comparable schools are offering that Piedmont is not, and whether the noted courses are significantly increasing their students' preparedness for the future. The one area where I do have specific concern is for seniors. I understand that many seniors cannot find interesting courses to take, and, having already fulfilled most of their graduation requirements, choose to take classes only 5 of the 7 available periods. I would like to see interesting courses offered that would entice our students to spend more of their senior year in the classroom. The role of elected officials in all of these matters is to ask questions, give guidance in areas of expertise and build consensus around the best solution. |
