Here are some ideas for the future of the Sequoia UHSD. I recognize that there are too many ideas here for the district to do, at least in a short period of time. The important part of the goals are to start to move the system into the 21st century by exploring ways to work that not only improve the education of our students, but that honor and value students, teachers and families, and that employ more modern processes that have proven effective in changing existing systems. Bureaucracy's usefulness is diminished and new structures and processes for organizing are essential. GOALS Students: Active student voice and involvement in all aspects of school Personalize school Students assessed in many ways including portfolios and senior projects Many alternatives for all students Opportunities to learn in different ways and time inside the school setting and outside in the community Parents: Open buildings at night for families and community use Provide Internet access and computers to all families More connection with kids and their families in their communities Work with non-profit agencies in the students' communities Teachers: More time for collaboration, planning and staff development Lower student load +60 -80 students per day Continue focus on better salaries and working conditions At least one demonstration school in the summer semester Board: Build a strategic vision for the future of the district Adopt principles and core values Prepare for future developments by planning a new assessment policy; new assessment policy beyond standardized tests Bring the district into the 21st century by having a structure that is more responsive to changing needs. Decentralize with more alternatives and more small schools |
