A City Council by the People of Burlingame for the People of Burlingame

By Ann Keighran

Candidate for Council Member; City of Burlingame; 4 Year Term

This information is provided by the candidate
City Council needs to be a representative government listening to the people of Burlingame and working with citizens and businesses to ensure the vitality of our city now and into the future.
CHALLENGES FACING OUR CITY TODAY
- City Council doesn't represent the people of Burlingame. The people of Burlingame have been forced to form a variety of citizen groups to do the work their representative government should be doing. Issues concerning residents and businesses alike, including upgrading the PG&E corridor, power reliability, and the quality of our business districts have not been adequately addressed by the Council. Many individuals have had to work above-and-beyond the call of duty as citizens, performing the role our Council should be playing, establishing citizen groups from Burlingamers unwilling to live without blackouts (BULB), Citizens for a Better Burlingame, the Peninsula Guardians, the 280 Corridor group, the Trousdale group, Broadway Improvement District, and the Downtown Burlingame Avenue Improvement District.
- Our schools and Council don't work together. Council hasn't voted consistently to support our school's needs. Schools are not benefiting from city government and equally city government has little insight into the Burlingame schools. Neither schools nor Burlingame benefit in today's model.

MY PLAN FOR THE FUTURE
- A City Council for the people of Burlingame and responsive to the entire community of Burlingame. On the Planning Commission I have engaged with residents and listened to their needs and concerns over projects ranging from individual houses, to the future of Broadway, to the new hospital and Safeway projects. On City Council, I will continue to engage with residents and business owners to listen to their concerns and hear their ideas on how we can make Burlingame better. I will hold frequent public forums and coffee gatherings, and will hold open-houses for both City Council and department functions. We need to encourage citizen input both by citizen community groups and individual members of the community.
- Bring the schools and City Council together. City Council needs to be more engaged with our schools. I will hold Council meetings at schools throughout Burlingame to encourage students, parents, and teachers to engage in their broader community, and to encourage Council members' responsibility for local school needs. Students from different schools would lead the pledge of allegiance at Council meetings, students and parents would present their schools' needs and top activities for 5-10 minutes at a Council meeting to generate greater community awareness.

Now is the time for a City Council that is responsive to the people of Burlingame and looking out for the future of our city.

Every day I meet with people in the city, and I will continue to listen to and represent the people of Burlingame on City Council. Most importantly, I will never lose sight of our long term vision for the city, and will make decisions that ensure the vitality of our city for decades to come, while also being atune to near-term issues.
