DOWN WITH TAXES

By Stanley G. "DOCTEUR" Hilton

Candidate for Board Member; Hillsborough City School District

WHY TAXES SHOULD BE USED FOR OUR VERY OWN HIGH SCHOOL HERE IN HILLSBOROUGH, NOT IN SOME DISTANT CITY
DOWN WITH TAXES!

Friends, Hillsboroughans and Townspeople, Lend Me Your Ear!
The premier rallying cry of the past 25 years has been,
"DOWN WITH TAXES!" Former President Ronald Reagan began his political career in his mid-50's by enunciating this battle cry.

Indeed, any successful candidate must be mindful of "DOWN WITH TAXES!" in order to be successful.
But how does the tax issue play in the current hotly contested election for Hillsborough School Board?
As former House Speaker Tip O'Neal once said "All politics is local."
And so it is, in a fundamental sense.
At the "grass roots" level, what could be more local than a local public school board? What could closer to voters than the formative education of our children?
If our tax dollars are taken from us by the county government, then why are our tax dollars being given away to every other small city in San Mateo County to pay for THEIR public high schools, while we in Hillsborough enjoy NO public high school of our own?
How can our children look forward to a complete education, when the school stops at the ninth grade and they are then forced either to go to an expensive private school, or an inferior and dangerous public high school in places like San Mateo or Redwood City?
How can we expect our children's public high school teachers and administrators to be accountable to us, when we have no high school of our own and must pay for someone else's public high schools in places like Daly City and East Palo Alto?
Enough is enough!
The Hillsborough School Board must awaken to the reality that if we are to be taxed through the nose with confiscatory taxes, then we must at least have our own public high school to be proud of.
In the words of Rabbi Hillel of Israel, "If we are not for ourselves, then who will be for us?"
If we must pay the dreaded Tax Collector, then let us at least insist that he spend the money on our own children here at home, not on other people's kids in other cities!
