What makes a school system great? Greatness comes not just from API scores, Distinguished Schools designations or CIF championships. A great school district provides broad opportunities to children of all ages, abilities and interests, and inspires children to take advantage of them. A great district sees each child as a tremendous gift with a boundless future. A great district respects the primary role of parents in the lives of their children and welcomes parental involvement in education.

Our district should offer the best education possible to each child, at a level appropriate to that child's ability. Just as important, our district should provide each child with opportunities to experience the non-academic world, through art, music, athletics, theater, photography, dance and so on. An Upland education should prepare children not just to make a living, but to appreciate life.

Our children deserve the best we can give them. Unfortunately, in this age of budget shortfalls and fiscal constraints, we cannot afford to give them all the opportunities we would like. It is a fact of life that some financial compromises have to be made + but, even as we make painful choices, we should still focus on what our goals are for the future, on what kind of district we want ours to be. We should never stop trying to make that happen.
