The birth of my daughter seven and one-half years ago was my real inspiration as I wanted to make a difference, not only in her public education, but in the public school system as a whole. As a social worker in county government, my knowledge and training allow me to see things in a broader perspective. I believe this viewpoint is of benefit to my daughter, the school district and the community as a whole.

The first priority would be financial accountability. Our district faces enormous budget deficits and these deficits must be addressed in a positive way to provide the best education possible for all students. One of the ways we manage tight budget issues in the county is to move resources from top and middle management to direct service for our clients. If we follow these same procedures within our district, we can minimize the adverse financial effects on our schools, students and teachers.

My next priority would be to collaborate with the other governing board members to be more transparent and open to the school district's community so parents will become more involved and know that their ideas and support are needed, appreciated and hopefully implemented.
