Beliefs on Education

By Kathy Y. Allavie

Candidate for Board Member; Riverside Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Thirteen educational points that cover Kathy Allavie's philosophy on education
1 I believe that the health of a community can be measured by its schools. Everyone must work in concert to bring about the needed improvements we need to make. 2 I believe we should plan for the inevitable growth our area will experience. Put all current plans for new schools on a fast track and look at all solutions for existing schools. 3 I believe in parity among RUSD schools, so that all our students have equal access to technology, text books and facilities. 4 I believe we need to be cheap with administration dollars and generous with our student dollars. 5 I believe children are given too many tests and that, when possible, we should cut back. 6 I believe we must offer before-school and after-school tutoring. 7 I believe we should expand the 'Academy' programs that have succeeded so spectacularly in some high schools. 8 I believe in giving teachers support and flexibility in their classrooms. Our teachers aren't robots in a factory, inserting widgets on an assembly-line. They need the chance to tailor their lessons to their children's specific needs. 9 I believe in offering all children access to extra-curricular activities, making sure that none are excluded because of lack of funds. 10 I believe that a good principal, just like the captain of a ship, makes all the difference in the school. Hiring the best people is paramount. 11 I believe we should have healthier foods in our schools and that all school facilities should be clean and attractive. 12 I believe that parents need as much feedback as possible--from the RUSD Board, their principal and their teachers. 13 I believe that we need to think of new, creative ways to deal with some of the old problems. No child should 'fall through the cracks' or be 'lost in the middle'. All children are important and need to be treated with respect.
