Los Angeles County, CA November 8, 2005 Election
Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Lance G. Widman

Candidate for
Governing Board Member; Hermosa Beach City Elementary School District

This information is provided by the candidate

Our students and schools have enjoyed many accomplishments over the past four years:
- Over 60% voted in favor of Measure J in 2002, making over $15,000,000 available for the modernization of the infrastructure at Valley and View schools, improvments in technology access for our students and their parents, eliminating four preexisting portables, double-sizing our technology lab and relocating our 3-5 science lab from a hallway into a classroom.
- New construction should begin in the near future at Valley school, including two new classrooms, two science labs, a new library/media center and multi-purpose gymnasium with at least two indoor teaching stations.
- The net result: At least five new classrooms/teaching stations as well as the wholesale modernization and upgrading of our classrooms and instructional facilities.
- Hermosa schools received the 2004 Distinguished Schools Award (out of 288 nominated statewide).
- Hermosa schools have been nominated for the 2004-2005 No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School Award, recognizing our exceptional academic standards.
- Due to the over $1,000,000 raised by the Ed Foundation and PTO, Hermosa schools were able to avoid major instructional program cuts.

Many challenges still remain:
- Maintaining a well-balanced instructional program involving the fundamentals as well as the arts, ethics, physical education and technology.
- Improving cooperation between the City and the School District concerning our community's youth.
- Providing an educational program that addresses the unique and special educational needs of all of our students.
- Enhancing staff development opportunities in core curriculum development and professional growth.
- Improving communication with Mira Costa/Redondo Union High Schools.
- Providing regular opportunities for parent, student, teacher and staff communications concerning District policies and programs.
