Why Run?

By Edmund A. Velasco

Candidate for Governing Board Member; East Whittier City Elementary School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Giving the students all of the skill they need to prepare them for success is the primary goal of all of the people who work and volunteer for the schools.
I am a candidate for the East Whittier Board of Education because I want our children to be prepared for life in this century. We not only need basics of reading, writing, and math, but to incorporate them with skills for the future, such as computer skills, critical-thinking, teamwork, technology training and fine arts. To meet the challenges of the next generation, our students have to be prepared. That means we have to create a teaching environment where kids can learn to respect themselves and others, where kids are taught values for life and encouraged to take responsibility for their own behavior and education.

We need to keep lines of communication open by a partnership with the Board of Education, parents, community, and the teachers. Our teachers need to be a part of the decision making process. They need to be involved in the decisions that affect the classroom and impact on their efforts to provide education to our children.

We need to make every effort to restore programs that have been cut due to a budget shortage. We need to think differently to create solutions to problems left behind by budget cuts. We must involve our community to help our children to succeed.

I need your vote and your support.
