Dear Friend,

I am running for re-election to the South Whittier School Board and would greatly appreciate your support.

I believe in the public school system and have worked very hard to maintain safe, high quality schools for our children. I have lived here for 51 years, attended the schools here and have raised my family here. I was an active leader in the local PTA's for numerous years. I also served as a Council President for the Whittier/Pico Rivera Council PTA. I was co-chair of Measure W school bond initiative in 1998 and the Measure I school bond initiative in 2004. These bonds have provided funds for modernizations and improvements at each of the schools in the South Whittier School District.

During my four years on the school board, we have maintained a balanced budget, something that is hard to do in this tough financial enviornment. We have added new classrooms at some of the school sites and new restrooms facilities at each school. We have maintained all of our programs. I have worked have worked hard to increase communication between the parents and the teachers, which we know contributes to the success of the children.

In the past four years the School District has seen solid gains in student achievement, including an average of 30% growth in student test scores and sometimes an even higher growth rate. Our school safety program is in place and is regularly evaluated. I believe our teaching staff is among the best in the State.

As in the past, I am committed to working very hard and giving our children the best education.

I hope that you will support my bid for re-election on November 8th.

Sincerely,

Sylvia Macias (#66 on your ballot)
