Stimulate Engineering & Science in Schools (Elementary, Middle & High School)

By James H. Gill

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Manhattan Beach Unified School District

More emphasis needs to be placed upon the need for students to enter the fields of science and engineering. The local area has a wealth of leaders who are willing to show how science and engineering studies can be exciting and offer a wonderful career opportunity.
With the need for engineers and scientists reaching critical proportions, it is important that we find ways to spark interest in students in these important fields of study. One way to do this is to have regularly scheduled visits to some of the local area companies to discover some of the truly remarkable things that they accomplish on a daily basis. There are many opportunities that are available to bring students into contact with these companies. The companies will benefit in the long term by stimulating an interest in students who will become their employees in the future. There are many opportunities for this interchange between students and local companies, but it takes effort to make them happen. A second area that will help stimulate interest in science and engineering is the Space and Missile Systems Center, located in El Segundo. They have demonstrations and briefings on what they do that they would most likely be willing to share with the students of the MB school system. There are rocket launches at Vandenburg AFB that is open for public viewing. This type of field trip for students at any age can be of great value in stimulating their interest in space and space exploration. If elected to the Board, I will try to make these things happen on a fairly regular basis.
