Candidate Statement

By Mark W. Distaso

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Acton-Agua Dulce Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Executive Management Experience with knowledge and training in multi-million dollar fiscal budgets, master planning, needs assessments and personnel management can bring answers to our chronic and long standing problems in the Acton Auga Dulce Unified School District.
My wife and I have been residents of Acton for 9 years and have two children, ages 9 and 7 in our school district. Wanting to find a safe and positive learning environment for Ryan and Rylie, and as an avid believer in the public school system, our local schools seemed the perfect place to enroll them. In following local school issues since moving to the area we have seen many positive activities, but we also see many issues of concern, including the constant agitation between School District administration and the public, the School Board and the public, or both. Although the community has been blamed for many of the District's woes, it is, despite the best personal efforts of everyone, simply the manner in which the District is managed that has caused our major problems. With nearly 30 years of experience as part of an organization and with my current position in that organization as an executive manager which employs 400 people with an annual budget of 39 million dollars, I can readily see management and policy issues that cause our schools difficulty. Concerned for my own children and the general plight of our schools, I have become actively involved in helping to find solutions to an array of School District issues. I have worked with the Superintendent, members of the School Board and with community members and I have advocated a number of long term solutions.

Sound fiscal responsibility; practical facility maintenance plans; comprehensive long range and Strategic Planning; and a School Board exercising dynamic leadership can develop a community based VISION for our schools. These are the SOLUTIONS that will bring our schools to the level that the community deserves.

Our goal should be for our local schools and our children to reach their highest potential. Sound, disciplined and responsive management will create an educational experience in a physical environment that will bring pride and confidence back to our schools. We must ALL work together to achieve this. In order to reach these goals I need YOUR vote. Whether you have children or not, our schools belong to us and we should take pride and ownership in them. In the interest of our children help me achieve this by giving me your vote on November 8th.
