Governing Board Member; Pasadena Area Community College District; Trustee Area 3

This information is provided by the candidate

As a young single mother of two children with nothing but hope and a prayer, my life was forever changed by a community college education. As such, I know first hand the difference an education can make in the lives of economically disadvantaged students and working adults. In actuality, the entire community wins from having an educated citizenry - greater economic productivity, employment, civic participation and home ownership. Perhaps that is why my entire professional life as a teacher, educator and community activist has been dedicated to helping people from all walks of life - people that never dreamt they could get a college education, to attain that dream.

Pasadena City College is a premier educational institution...it is one of the few avenues available for achieving economic and social mobility - the promise of the 'American Dream'. As such, I believe PCC is particularly suited to helping students in Northwest Pasadena get started on the road to a successful college education and to provide job training and re-training opportunities for our community.

As a PCC Trustee, I have consistently advocated the expansion of PCC's educational services and programs in Northwest Pasadena. I plan to continue to be a strong voice representing the educational needs of the residents of my district and to facilitate better utilization of what PCC has to offer by the individuals, organizations and businesses in our community. I am particularly committed to building an educational partnership between PCC and PUSD to improve the level of student success for at-risk African American and Latino high school students - the majority of whom reside in Northwest.
