Leighton Anderson has been a member of the Whittier Union High School District Board of Trustees since 1997. He currently serves as the Clerk of the Board.

Leighton and his wife, Diane, are the parents of three children. Their two sons currently attend La Serna High School, and their daughter graduated from La Serna in 2002. Diane, too, is active in school activities, and currently serves as the Co-President of La Serna's PTSA.

Leighton is an elected member of the Delegate Assembly of the California School Boards Association (CSBA) and serves on the Board of Trustees of the Tri-Cities Regional Occupational Program (also known as "Tri-Cities ROP"). He is the President of the Santa Fe Springs Chamber of Commerce, and participates in Chamber's Mentor Program, which provides business mentors for students at Santa Fe High School. Leighton also serves on the Board of Directors of the Rio Hondo Symphony Association, providing admission-free classical music concerts at the Vic Lopez Auditorium of Whittier High School, and he has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Whittier Chamber of Commerce. In addition, Leighton is a member of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association, the all-volunteer organization that produces the world-famous Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Football Game.

Leighton attended college at Claremont Men's College, where he received his B. A. degree, magna cum laude, in 1976. He then attended law school at Columbia University, where he received his Juris Doctor degree in 1978. He is an attorney and a partner in the law firm of Bewley, Lassleben & Miller, LLP, in Whittier.
