Experience, citizenry and community service, values, goals, fiduciary responsibility, and commitment are what I bring to the Arcata School District and are the reasons I am running.
- Experience: Served on the Arcata School Board since mid-1997. President 2004-present, Clerk of the Board 1999-2001. Eight years of experience equals continuity, stability and dedicated effort. I know the issues in the District -- our strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities.
- Citizenry and community service: I am a parent in the district. My daughter completed her K-8 years in the Arcata School District. I have lived in Arcata since 1983. I care about the Arcata School District and our community. School board members are individually, as well as collectively, responsible to all citizens of the district. I will listen to, work with, and represent constituents in the district.
- Values: Education, in its broadest sense, is the most important service we can provide our children. An excellent education for all children is fundamental to their effective participation in society.
- Goals for Arcata School District: The Arcata School District must provide the highest quality education in a safe and stimulating environment that fosters respect for others. Our schools (Bloomfield K-5, Sunset K-5. SunnyBrae Middle School and our affiliated charter schools) are advancing students in becoming self-motivated lifelong learners and responsible members of their community. Students need to understand basic skills and their practical application while being challenged to maximize their individual potentials. Students need to develop a healthy, positive self-concept that will enable them to achieve success in all aspects of their life.
- Fiduciary responsibility: School board members are responsible for adopting an annual balanced budget. The Arcata School District budget is six million dollars, the vast majority of which goes toward salaries and benefits for district employees, primarily certificated staff. Fiscal responsibility is essential to uphold the quality of the district. The district is fiscally sound.
- Commitment as a board member: As a board member, I will work to enhance the education of our youth, to shepherd educational resources responsibly, and to support the development of skilled, creative, inspired, and caring personnel. My personal characteristics, administrative skills and experience help me understand the components of quality education and act in a reasonable and fair manner.
