What a Great School Should Have
For a really great school, we need imagination, innovation and the freedom to do things. Look at the things that worked in the past. Then, think of how things could be better. The school needs a strong track program. Track develops the physical body and provides a social setting for nourishing relationships. Basketball is fun. I suggest fully participating teams, where any number of teams are formed depending on how many students want to play basketball. Middle school is too early to be depriving students of the opportunity to play. Some form of football, like flag football could be good. It's better to have strong physical activity on the field rather than in the classroom. Perhaps,it may be possible to give physical education credit to students who participate in sports after school. This would ease the cost burden of providing an active sports program and allow athletes to pursue other academic classes in school hours.
Provide the opportunity for any number of after school clubs and activities.
Hire and retain faculty who are fun people, who generate happiness in students with the academic learning situation.
Listen to the students.
Provide extra help that brings up the academic level of all students.
Make sure that we have a way of measuring academic performance apart from multiple choice testing.
And, facilitate an environment where students build a foundation for future physical, academic and social well being.
As a board member, I focus on academic excellence, the relevance of what we ask of the students and, equally important, what we are doing to make this a happy time of their lives.
