Recreation is a very important aspect of Humboldt Bay - both for the people who live here and the families who pay us a visit. As a young boy, I enjoyed many hours of rowing up and down Humboldt Bay. There's an enjoyment and a serenity to rowing that's really hard to describe. I want to make sure that our Harbor provides other youngsters these opportunities. We need to make sure we continue to improve the access to the Bay. I believe that these opportunities will benefit the local residents and will draw tourists to our area and provide reasons for extended stays in our community. Ideally, I would like to see recreation not only mean additional access in terms of boating ramps and picnic areas, I would also like to see RV parks built on the peninsula. I envision the completion of the Timber Heritage Museum with a railroad loop created for tourists to tour the Harbor. Also, a walking/biking trail would loop the Harbor and connect Arcata with Eureka. The completed Eureka Boardwalk with restaurants, fish market, shopping and condominiums is nearing a reality. Next to the Adorni Center, the Humboldt State University facility would offer rowing and canoeing to locals and visitors alike and a Marine Lab, also run by HSU, would provide learning opportunities about the Bay's many inhabitants. To the south we might see a Naval Ship docked as a tourist attraction. The south bay would continu to be sanctioned as a wildlife refuge and would be visible to those utilizing the Bay's many recreational opportunities. |
