Parent Involvement, Healthy Communities and Drug AwarenessBy Dennis J. HansonCandidate for Governing Board Member; Rohnerville School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Parent involvement is critical for student success. Schools make multiple efforts to invite parents inside and the response is good at early grades and at special events, but participation trails off for all but the best students in later grades. Efforts should be made to extend involvement by having the school going into the community with outreach. With encouragement of staff, I hope to explore some of these strategies. Healthy communities contribute to student success. My years of involvement on the Humboldt County Alcohol and Other Drugs Advisory Board and most recently with the Speed Prevention and Awareness Network (SPAN II) has shown me the enormous negative impact of this problem on all communities. It is estimated that as high as 30 percent of all students are in some way, directly or indirectly, negatively impacted from drug use by parents or others. Direct observations, while I worked on construction in this district, have shown me there is a very real problem and that students are impacted daily. As a Board Member I will direct as much effort as needed to help reduce drug problems in this community. I will identify problems, propose solutions for parents or community members and I will give persons in this community tools to fight this intrusive negative epidemic. |
