We have strayed from fiscal conservatism, as our entitlement spending continues to grow, the budget deficit reaches records highs, and our national debt nears eight trillion dollars.
Before Hurricane Katrina, the budget deficit was at three hundred and fourteen billion dollars. Katrina gives us an example of the wasteful spending and misquided agencies of the federal government. Now our government's solution to its failings in both protecting the Gulf Coast through levees and in evacuating the citizens under the notice we had it to expand government's involvement and create the biggest reconstruction project in this country's history. The answer is not bigger government and greater federal money, but instead free enterprise with lower taxes and less government restrictions. Walmart, Home Depot, the churches, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army and all the other businesses and charities have been far outperforming the government in the hurricane response. Save for the infrastructure, our businesses will do the same for the redevelopment as well.
