Myke Shelby of San Diego officially announced his candidacy for mayor of San Diego on May 31, 2005. Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., and having moved to America's Finest City in 1987, Shelby, a Jew, was a leading advocate for saving the cross at the Mount Soledad Veterans Memorial. The campaign led to the collection of more than double the signatures needed to force a July 26th vote on the cross + the same ballot voters will choose a successor to resigning Mayor Dick Murphy.

Shelby served with the 101st Airborne as a forward air controller during the Vietnam War, and has since been active in veteran's affairs. He participated in the inauguration of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in 1982, and was the keynote speaker at the ceremonies marking the 15th Memorial Day at "The Wall" in May 1998. In 1987, Shelby joined with several hundred paratroopers and former paratroopers from around the world to train in Israel, commemorating the liberation of Jerusalem and earned his Israeli paratrooper wings. Shelby was awarded the Operation Homefront Hero Award for the work he has done for active and retired military servicemen and women in San Diego.

In addition to hosting a worldwide talk show on http://www.AmericanCycleTalk.com, Shelby owns San Diego Harley-Davidson + which has four locations throughout the city of San Diego including Kearny Mesa, Little Italy, Seaport Village and La Jolla. Shelby currently serves as the executive director of American Bikers Aimed Toward Education (ABATE) of California, a motorcycle rights organization. For more than 20 years, he has been involved with Rolling Thunder, a motorcycle rally of 300,000 riders in Washington, D.C., that takes place every Memorial Day to keep the country focused on the POW/MIA issue. Shelby was recently inducted into the Motorcycle Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame.

In 1968, Shelby founded two successful businesses at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport named Jetports Brokerage, a real estate development and brokerage business and M. Schacher, Ltd., a commercial insurance brokerage firm. He served as the founding president of the JFK International Rotary Club and as the president of the JFK International Airport Chamber of Commerce. Shelby ran for California State Assembly, and often speaks before the California Legislature in Sacramento.

Shelby lives in Carmel Valley with his wife, Paula. They have four children; Dax, Jennifer, Heather and Danny. Dax, the oldest, is a screenwriter. Jennifer and Heather are both graduates of the United State Air Force Academy. Jennifer + having served her country + now resides with her husband, Tyler, in San Diego and their son, Tristen. Heather is serving as a lieutenant. Danny is a senior at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona.
