Nilssen and the "No Child Left Behind" actBy Sally NilssenCandidate for Board Member; Glendale Unified School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Nilssen believes in "local control" of schools.Nilssen believes in supporting the law, and the "No Child Left Behind" act is the law. At the same time, Nilssen believes in local control of public schools, and that means, among other things, encouraging creativity and productivity at the local level. The teachers supporting Nilssen have expressed concerns that "No Child Left Behind" does not allow them to treat each child as an individual, and each classroom of students as unique. The teachers and Nilssen believe that standards are set through lively interaction between challenge and nurture in the classroom. Nilssen believes that the role of the classroom teacher in recognizing and setting appropriate standards should not be nullified by standards imposed by outside persons who have no knowledge of local conditions, needs, and resources. The law can stiftle the individual teacher,or it can provide crucial support. In addition, the teachers want the responsibilities of the students themselves and their parents clarified and enforced to ensure successful educational attainment. As a School Board member, Nilssen will work with other members to support teachers and administrators in the District to find the right balance between local creativity and national requirements. |
