JOE MANDOKY -

I was born on October 6, 1945, in Laufen, Germany, to Hungarian refugee parents who were fleeing from the Communists at the end of WWII. We came to the U.S.A. in 1951, and I still remember seeing the Statue of Liberty as our troop transport passed by. The family was soon on a train to Watts. Four years latter we moved to South Gate, where the family apartment still stands.
Formative years were spent in Catholic schools. After high school I entered the seminary. During the Viet Nam War, I joined the U.S. Army as an M.P. and later served as a Chaplain's assistant and received an honorable discharge.
I worked at various occupations while obtaining my B.S. in Business Administration, from Long Beach State University, also customer service for 3 years at Western Airlines.
After graduation I moved to Glendale in 1973 to work for R.V. Weatherford in management for a year. I was also a teacher at Pater Noster High School until I was able to use my degree in Finance-Real Estate to get my broker's license the same year. I opened a real estate office on East Glenoaks which I later sold before it became a park. I have lived "happily ever-after" selling real estate in Glendale and surrounding areas..
Part of growing up in a Hungarian family meant Hungarian scouts, church, and folk dancing. After the departure of the Red menace from Hungary, I have traveled many times to Hungary to visit my extended family. I'm always glad my parents chose to come to America.
In 1979 I was ordained a mail order minister and later received an honorary Doctor of Divinity for my good deeds. For the last ten years I have worked, besides being a real estate consultant, in a street ministry, bringing God's message to the streets. I've earned the title of the "Hug Doctor" and am still trying to make the world a little better, a hug at a time (when asked).

I coached AYSO soccer and Little League, T-Ball, and Girls Softball for many years .
I helped organize the Christmas Cantree where I have helped gather more than 500,000 pounds of food over the past 16 years for the Salvation Army and the YWCA shelter. I have also helped start other food programs.
Served over 15 years on the Knock Out Graffiti committee, now the Glendale city's CLEAN & Beautiful committee, chairman 2004-05, is very rewarding. I helped start the Park program on vacant land in the redevelopment area downtown to make those empty lots more attractive until developed. I work on the annual Graffiti Paint Out Day where between 400-600 persons spend a day cleaning our streets and painting out graffiti. I help fight graffiti on a daily basis in our community. We now do a poster contest with over 10 thousand K to 6 school children, drawing posters with the theme "I Love My Neighborhood."
From1997 to 2002 the Glendale City Council appointed me as Trustee to the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control Board, an organization that wards off disease carrying vectors.
Community and organizational involvements include: member and past director of Glendale Kiwanis, past president and past director of Glendale Association of Realtors, I was recognized as Realtor of the Year in 1998, past director of Glendale Association for the Retarded, auditor and director of the Glendale Community Concert Association, member and past-president of a local square dance club, past president and "ATM" member Burbank Toastmaster #125, Member American Mensa, Member American Legion Post 127, etc.
