BIOGRAPHY
Kurt L. Schmalz, 48, has been a member of the Redondo Beach City Council, representing District 4, for the past four years. Before his election to the City Council, Kurt served 5 ½ years on the city's Planning Commission, including a one-year term as the commission's chairman. Kurt has also served on the city's Charter Review Committee and the Crime Prevention Commission. During his tenure on the council, Kurt served a one-year term as Mayor Pro Tem and a two-year term on the City-Schools Joint Committee. He has also been the city's voting delegate to the National League of Cities and the League of California Cities, where he serves on the League's Ethics Education Task Force. Kurt is also a member of the Redondo Beach Rotary Club, the Surfrider Foundation and the South Bay Smoke-Free Beaches Coalition.
Kurt believes that his experience, education and training make him the best candidate to be Redondo Beach's next mayor. The following is a summary of his qualifications:
- Business Litigation Attorney for more than 20 years. Given highest rating ("AV") by Martindale-Hubbell and was voted by his peers as one of Southern California's "Super Lawyers" for 2004.
- Business Owner. For the past 12 years Kurt has been an operating partner in the law firm of Lurie, Zepeda, Schmalz & Hogan, a business of more than 25 employees. He knows first hand what it takes to run a small business and to meet a payroll twice a month.
- Teacher, Lecturer, and Author. Kurt was a member of the adjunct faculty at Pepperdine University, teaching a course in Communications Law. He has lectured at seminars for attorneys on "Practical Legal Ethics in California," co-authoring a manual on legal ethics to accompany the seminars. He has also published numerous articles in legal periodicals on a variety of legal topics, and testified as an expert on legal ethics in Los Angeles Superior Court.
- Award-Winning Journalist. After graduating from college, Kurt worked as a news reporter for the Nashville (Tennessee) Banner, covering the city and county governments and doing investigative reporting projects. In 1979 and 1980, he received state-wide investigative reporting awards for a series of stories on corruption in the County Trustee's office.
- Education. Kurt earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, from Vanderbilt University, where he was editor-in-chief of the campus newspaper. He also earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Vanderbilt University Law School, where he was the senior articles editor of the Vanderbilt Law Review.
- Personal. Kurt has been a resident of Redondo Beach for the past 15 years. He is married to Victoria and has a 10-year old stepson, Nicholas, who attends Redondo Beach public schools.
