Improved Family and Youth ServicesBy Felicia MollinedoCandidate for Council Member; City of San Gabriel | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Put into place Family Resource Centers in Collaboration with Department of Mental Health and Department of Children and Family Services. Implementation of Resource and Referral Agencies in Collaboration with Home-Schooled Children Support Groups, Grandparent and Foster Parent Resources and Supportive Services, Single Parent Co-ops and Fair Housing Rights, Improved Services for Seniors and Youth. Now this seems like a lot to take on for one small city. But I have personally seen communities come together and collaborate ways to bring these resources into their communities. NOT IN MY BACKYARD COALITIONS have been established to keep Wal-Mart out of their cities and even the city of Seattle in an attempt to keep their city from becoming an urban concrete jungle had a park built on top of a major sky scraper. Stranger things have happened!! Our community needs to come together and make our voices heard. Do we want another park? Do we want better community activities? Do we want to keep driving to Alhambra for the basketball youth programs that are $15.00 where our children get T-shirts and go to Staples Center versus the $60.00 we pay here in San Gabriel where our children throw the basketball into a hoop at Washington Elementary in one single solitary line? How boring is that? I want to see quality in our sports and recreation services. I want to see Vincent Lugo Park renovated not torn apart! WHAT DO YOU WANT? The citizens of San Gabriel need to come together and make their voices heard. We can keep wasting our gas and driving to other cities for the many services they offer or we can DEMAND them right here in our city or essentially in our OWN BACK YARDS! If elected I plan to listen to what the community wants and make sure that a GOOD OLE'BOY style of local government is never a problem in this city again. In a city of 28,000 residents that are demographically 20-64 years of age and 48% Asian, 30% Hispanic or Latin American, and 33% White, 52% Female and 48% Male why is it that only 1,500 people vote in our local elections? What does that say about the concern for our city? What does that say about the city's attempt to actively engage its citizens in the voting process? My hope is to bring an emotional reinvestment back into this city. It is time for progress. If we have a Mission in this city, shouldn't it be to put programs into existence that will support our citizens? The families, children and seniors are our citizens. We need to make ourselves a priority to this city. I believe we can do this by voicing what we want to see here in San Gabriel. |
