Downtown Redevelopment

By Robert L "Bob" Donnelson

Candidate for Council Member; City of Azusa

This information is provided by the candidate
The proposed Starbucks causes controversy in our downtown.
The proposed redevelopment of "Block 37" (the old Sav On Furniture store at Azusa and Foothill Blvd), has raised a small ruckus at the recent council meetings.

The arguments range from, a sweetheart deal for the developer, conflict of interest by the city, the take over of the downtown by the national chains, and the abandonment of existing businesses.

The downtown has been a retail wasteland for many years. I take my hat off to those store owners that have put their money on the line to do their best to make a go of the downtown area. But we need much, much more. I believe this new project, with Starbucks, a UPS Store, T-Mobil, and a sit down restaurant, along with the proposed Blockbuster in the old 98+ store, will provide the impetus for the long awaited redevelopment of the east side of Azusa Ave (Block 36), and put our downtown on the road to being the destination place that we all have thought about for decades.
