A letter to voters.By Denis O'LearyCandidate for Governing Board Member; Oxnard Elementary School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Coming forth in a time of need, I was selected to fill a vacancy on the Oxnard School District Board of Trustees. In one year I have helped bring the district into budget. I refused to make cuts by increasing the student to teacher ratio. The board cut the furthest from the classrooms as we could and met our mandate. My efforts have brought money into the school district to support our teachers and students. Well before sitting as a trustee, I fought to allow denied federal literacy funds to go to poor and minority districts. In March 2004 I won the lawsuit. The Oxnard School District will now receive $6,360,000 over the next three years for teacher training and student literacy support. Facing a population boom in Oxnard with already overcrowded schools, I have traveled to Sacramento twice in the past year (at my own expense) to seek building funds. In light of the rising cost of living in Oxnard, I have called for a Living Wage Policy, which will raise district and contacted employees who make a minimum wage to $10.00 an hour. I ask for your vote to continue improving the education of our children. Sincerely, Denis O'Leary |
