Candidate for
United States Representative; District 8

Lelani Dowell is a 26 year old worker and lesbian of African American and Hawaiian descent. She is a labor studies student at San Francisco State University. A resident of the Mission District, she has worked as a pre-school teacher, union organizer and office worker. Dowell is a socialist and a member of Workers World Party and Peace and Freedom Party.

Dowell has been a youth organizer and media spokesperson for International A.N.S.W.E.R over the last two years working to oppose the U.S. war on Iraq. Dowell has travelled to Colombia, Venezuela and El Salvador in solidarity with the anti-imperialist struggles in Latin America. Dowell has been an outspoken critic of the Patriot Act. She sees this as a way to whip up a racist hysteria against people of color especially those of Arab and South Asian descent. Dowell is running as an antiwar candidate who makes the connection between the wars abroad and the war against the poor and working people in the United States.

As a worker, lesbian of color and political activist, she will continue to fight for the rights of all workers.
