Housing
San Luis Obispo's housing problem is not unique. There is a shortage of housing for lower, middle class, and middle upper class income levels. There is obviously more demand than there is supply. Also there is the issue of growth and overtaxing our resources and infrastructure. The housing gap is a difficult issue but there can be some innovative ways to help, starting with mixed use zoning and occupancies. Other opportunities exist to emulate communites that have faced the same challenges.
Economic Development (Jobs)
Economic Development is a double-edged sword. Growth can be managed and we must decide as a community what industries we are willing to allow since many industries are harmful to our existing environment. Our vision has been to try to attract high tech computer, software, and environmentally friendly companies or expand our existing companies. Unfortunately, we seem to be leaning towards more low-paying retail and service related jobs. There may be other alternatives.
Environment
The existing health of our residents depends upon improving the quality of our air and water. Our survival depends upon a healthy environment. In order to remain a destination of choice for retirees and tourists, it is imperative that we maintain the character and cleanliness of our environment. We can expect the environment to deteriorate if best available control technologies are not instituted. We need to be diligent to put the environment first when considering development.
