Candidate for
Community College Board; County of San Francisco

For the past four years, I have provided dedicated service on the College Board. In this role, I helped to create a climate of tolerance, significantly improved Strategic, Education, and Facilities Master Plans providing clearer goals and ways to measure achievements so that we can be certain that City College is meeting the needs of the community, and advocated for improved audit training for the Board of Trustees and changes in terms of our responsibilities for oversight. In addition, I bring 20 years of work in non-profit organizations managing budgets, coordinating programs, and raising money to my service on the College Board.

I believe that the Board of Trustees acting as a unit can support City College by being accessible to various constituent groups, by respecting the difference between governing and managing roles, and by setting an example for constructive dialogue and debate to resolve complex issues. The Board should be prepared to advocate for funding. Fundamentally, the Board exists to represent the public interest by setting policies that meet the needs of the community, to establish goals towards meeting those needs, to monitor the achievement of those goals, and to revise policies as necessary. The Board should always seek to provide constructive feedback to encourage people to work and learn as well as they can.
