TRAFFIC SAFETY

By Christine A. Linnenbach

Candidate for Supervisor; County of San Francisco; District 7

This information is provided by the candidate
San Francisco's transportation system faces a number of challenges. We have the nation's second highest pedestrian fatality rate. I agree with the Mayor that MUNI must be expanded to meet the City's growing needs and that we must not punish drivers, but rather create a full range of transportation options that District Seven residents may choose to utilize.

As Supervisor, I will: . Work to regulate traffic flow and promote pedestrian safety on Brotherhood Way, Clarendon Avenue, Portola Drive, Santa Clara Avenue and other portions of Saint Francis Woods that are increasingly utilized as thoroughfares. My office will stop dangerous speeding along Sloat Boulevard and 19th Avenue.

. Hold hearings with the Department of Public Works and craft legislation to improve pedestrian safety, especially near our schools and in areas where are seniors congregate and reside.

. Work to secure funding for more pedestrian countdown clocks at key intersections in District Seven so that all members of the population can cross the street safely.

. Support the reduction of speed limits in District Seven to reduce speeds on residential streets, areas adjacent to our City Schools and require that DPW increase the visibility of well-marked pedestrian crosswalks.

. Having studied City Planning at UC Berkeley, I have the expertise and training to ask tough and appropriate questions at Committee hearings, and to work with City staff to create state of the art, cost-effective solutions to craft sensible, traffic calming measures that can be tailored to the needs of our neighborhoods.

· Given my background and training working as an attorney at the Hall of Justice, I will work with the California Highway Patrol and the San Francisco Police Department to create zero tolerance zones on 19th Avenue to abate drunk driving on our City streets and State Highways that lead into and through District Seven.

MAKE SAN FRANCISCO A PEDESTRIAN-FRIENDLY CITY

As District Seven Supervisor, I will:

Enhance the pedestrian realm. The City's pedestrian realm--its sidewalks, walkways, plazas, and steps--should be enhanced by better design, improved lighting, street trees, and public art.

Improve pedestrian safety by advocating for the creation of a District Seven pedestrian task force and work with appropriate State, local, and City agencies and departments to develop higher pedestrian safety standards and an action plan for implementing pedestrian safety improvements.

I will also further the City's efforts to reduce red-light running.

Establish a traffic-calming program for residential neighborhoods. I will create a neighborhood traffic-calming program for District Seven in order to reduce traffic speeds in residential areas and around schools and prevent cut-through traffic on smaller residential streets.

IMPROVE STREET DESIGN AND MAINTENANCE

As District Seven Supervisor, I will:

Improve street lighting by developing new lighting standards that provide greater visibility, conserve energy, reduce "light leakage" into people's windows and the sky, and upgrade street lighting citywide. This is not only good for the environment but it will save the City, and its taxpayers, money.

Encourage active use of the sidewalk by local businesses. I will ask the Planning Department, Department of Building Inspection, and the Public Health Department to ease restrictions on outdoor seating, sidewalk vendors, and other desirable commercial uses of public space. This is not only good for street life but it's also good for small business and for the local economy.
