"...at the center of the resurgence of San Francisco's progressive movement" -San Francisco Bay Guardian Robert Haaland is a veteran progressive activist who has dedicated himself to protecting renters, fighting for social justice, and achieving political reforms that empower working people, minorities and neighborhoods. Named a "local hero" by the San Francisco Bay Guardian for his central role in the city's progressive movement, former President of the Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club, and strongly endorsed by the San Francisco Tenants Union, Robert has an unmatched record of commitment and accomplishment: Led campaigns to protect renters from unjust evictions and to stop landlord-backed efforts to gut rent control Fought for police accountability and against police brutality Sparked and managed the write-in campaign for Tom Ammiano for Mayor in 1999 Helped return the San Francisco Democratic Party to its progressive roots as a two-time elected member of the San Francisco Democratic Central Committee Organized neighborhood protection efforts to stop displacement of San Francisco residents and rubber-stamping by the Planning Commission As a union organizer, is currently leading efforts to protect front-line city services in 60 different departments, like Muni and public health, from layoffs and service cuts. From his knowledge of city departments, Robert knows how the city works and can help neighborhoods better access city services and navigate city government Awarded the Alice B.
