Enhance professional development opportunities for teachers. Go beyond the STEP program.

Additional training for teachers to enhance interpersonal skills and improve effectiveness in the classroom. With that, more money (real money) for full time teachers.

I'm against the current method for determining merit raises. The current method for giving out merit raises is too subjective and too inconclusive and can also lead to a "good old boy" network where some teachers try to ingratiate themselves with the principal. Merit raises should be given out in a way that fosters teamwork. All teachers involved should receive merit raises not just the last teacher who happens to be there when the fruit of every teachers' work is borne.

I am against K-1 split classrooms. Splits in upper grades are ok so long as it is heterogeneous.

In regards to a possible preschool program for English language learners, I want to ensure that there is parent involvement and accountability so that the program does not turn into a free social service.

Maintain classroom size reduction to have better teacher to student ratios. The better that ratio is the better the environment for learning. Better learning environments foster better retention and growth.

I have heard that flex groups have been used with incredible success in other districts within the county. Kids taught at their personal level of understanding will clearly comprehend and retain more than those who are too overwhelmed or not sufficiently challenged.

Use high school community service hours to assist English learners after school with homework.

I want to make sure money is spent wisely and for the best benefit of all students. I know that with budgeting, we have to separate the "nice to haves" from the "need to haves."
