On-going academic excellence

By Daniel A. Cadena, Jr.

Candidate for Board Member; Santa Maria Joint Union High School District

This information is provided by the candidate
No matter how hard our students and teachers work to achieve the desired API level, the bar is still raised, regardless of past accomplishments.
I believe students want to achieve, given the right tools. In 1996, Santa Maria High School became the first school in the district recognized as a California Distinguished School. In 2002, Righetti was also recognized as a California Distinguished School.

At the last school year, Santa Maria High School was recognized for excellence in academics, by the College Council, for having a large number of students going on to college. Santa Maria was one of only three schools, in the nation, to receive this honor. Also this year, Santa Maria High School was recognized for the sixth year in a row, by the AVID program, for high acheivement.

Students can succeed, through positive reinforcement, and higher expectations. I believe, negative statements only gets you negative results.

We must continue to expect higher attendance and a greater number of students taking college-level courses. Let's look at what works, and expand on it. If vocational studies keeps a student in school, let's encourage that. Let's look at getting local sponsorships from our local industries. Every avenue should be looked at, with one goal in mind--Academic Excellence.
