Growth in Elk Grove

By Carol Chase McElheney

Candidate for City; City of Elk Grove; Council District 5

This information is provided by the candidate
Unlimited residential growth has brought traffic congestion, crowded schools, and an eroded way of life to Elk Grove
I have lived in Elk Grove for 12 years, and worked here on occasion since 1977. Since then, residential and retail growth has overwhelmed our streets and destroyed our natural resources, as well as the "small town" feeling Elk Grove used to have. Elk Grove is now a bedroom community where few who work in the city can afford to live here, and those who live here commute elsewhere to work. This causes a leakage of revenue when workers return to Sacramento or Galt to spend their paychecks.

Runaway residential development has resulted in crowded schools on two lane roads that cannot accomodate current traffic levels. There are very few high paying employment opportunities in town.

A few land speculators and developers have gotten very rich by destroying our open space and farmland. Resources such as ground water are finite, and are being used up. More pavement means less water will return to the ground.

I support a moratorium on residential growth until we have more business development with higher paying jobs, and better infrastructure to support the additional traffic.

I am also firmly behind maintaining the Urban Services Boundary. This will concentrate development within the City and reduce sprawl.
