Educational Philosophy and Goals of Academic Achievement

By Diane A. Lenning, Ed.M.

Candidate for Trustee; Coast Community College District; Trustee Area 3

This information is provided by the candidate
Position on Fiscal Responsibility, academic achievement, course offerings, state curriculum alignment, budget restraints, and community support.
Restructuring of curriculum and course offerings will be necessary as students enter local colleges with increased academic proficiency. Many many not need pre-General Education classes as previously, reducing the need for remedial academic courses. This will broaden the availability of course offerings meeting the needs of a more diverse student population and educational needs of the community at large. This will allow for more efficiency of expenditures of funds, facilitating a greater degree of fiscal responsibility in the district budget. In this time of budget shortfalls, we must be innovative in meeting the financial needs.

President Bush has recently announced the increase of funds to be provided to community colleges. This will affirm the continuation of quality education for all students, including vocational and self-improvement classes for the entire community.

As an educator in Garden Grove Unified School District, 2004 recipient of the National Eli Broad Award for improved Academic Excellence, one of the many components of academic success includes the focus on English Immersion. Secondly, state academic alignment of coursework measured through state assessments is paramount to identifying areas of concentration in order to increase continued academic improvement and success of all students.

Intervention and mandatory tutoring programs based on student testing utilizing state academic alignment is already producing huge academic growth among California students. State academic standards have provided the basis for measurement of academic achievement needed to empower students in educational self-evaluation towards success.

Awards, scholarships, recognition, and various other incentives encourage student progress and achievement. Publication of student achievement in local newspapers, magazines, and publications have provided the continued recognition that encourages student progress and achievement.

These ongoing improvements in education in the local college district will assure the level of course work for students necessary for successful transfer to four year colleges and universities. My first hand experiences of teaching in a district of high esteem and nationally recognized successes of academic improvements in achievement will be valuable for the future success of students in our local college district.
