Debbie's vision and public statementsBy Debbie Cotton, Esq.Candidate for Board Member; Ocean View School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Quality schools are a community's best asset and our children its greatest resource. Safe neighborhoods, community pride and higher property values are a direct result of quality education. Daily, I am an advocate for our children. A year prior to my second grader starting school in the Ocean View School District I began attending School Board meetings and PTO meetings. Today, I have attended almost all Board meetings, been on the District's Budget Advisory Committee for 2 years, participated in the Curriculum committee, been an active member of the Golden View PTO, including holding positions such as 1st Vice President, membership chair, jog-a-thon chair and more. Prior to having my own practice as a Family Attorney, fighting for the rights of our children, I was a financial analyst at McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing). My husband and I have coached Little League teams for 3 years at OVLL and have volunteered with many other charitable organizations. I have sat on many boards, including the Orange County Bar Association, been the President of the Orange County Women Lawyers Association and the CHOC Sponsorship Counsel. I continually work hard to ensure the needs of our children are met. I believe our community must offer the best opportunity for a successful education. I believe that teacher salaries should be structured to attract and retain the very best educators in our district. I will fight to keep class size reduction. I will fight to keep up to date textbooks in the hands of our children. I believe that the support staff should be counted for and recognized. I believe that modernization is important. I believe in a safe environment that is conducive to learning. It is important that we are up to date in our curriculum and technology. All this should be done without additional taxpayer money. I believe in accountability, fiscal responsibility, communication and respect. My husband went through Ocean View schools and our children will too. I am committed to ensuring our children have a great place and the opportunity to learn.
