Why We Should Support Measure IBy Steven T. PolkablaCandidate for Mayor; City of Pacific Grove | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Measure "I" basically comes down to this, do you trust the City Council (both present and future) to protect our open spaces or do you, the people, want to protect it?The current City Council has shown a disrespect for the will of the people. They should not be trusted with anything so precious as our open space. Supporting Measure "I" means that no new buildings will be built on open space without voter approval. If an existing building on open space needs to be expanded, it can, up to 40% more. Any expansion greater then 40% will require voter approval. A pumping plant that is underground is not considered a building so it is not affected by Measure "I" The library (Zoned U) wants to expand past the centerline of Grand Avenue into Jewell Park (Zoned O) so the library expansion will be considered a new building in an open space zone which Measure "I" prohibits without voter approval. But according to law, buildings in open space zones must be pertinant to the open space that they are going to be built in. Is a library a pertinant structure in an open space zone? Let the voters decide! |
